Empowering Queer Activism & Leadership (EQuAL)

This year's conference will be hosted by University of Richmond's Student Allinance for Sexual Diversity.
REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!
Tentative Schedule is below.

Candace Gingrich will be our Keynote speaker on Friday evening. It is open to the general public.

Since 1995, Candace Gingrich has served as a key advocate for issues of importance to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community. Her involvement in the movement for queer equality began when her brother, Rep. Newt Gingrich, R-GA., was elected House speaker. Her 1996 autobiography, The Accidental Activist, was a best seller in the LGBT community. Gingrich has been profiled in national newspapers & magazines, guest-blogged at Huffington Post and appeared on Good Morning America, Countdown with Keith Olbermann and  the Queen Latifah Show. She also memorably guest-starred as the minister on Friends in the groundbreaking episode “The One with the Lesbian Wedding.” On behalf of the Human Rights Campaign, Gingrich has criss-crossed the country to promote the importance of coming out, the duty to vote and the power of everyday conversations to change minds. As HRC Foundation’s Youth & Campus Outreach associate director, Gingrich works to provide tools, facilitate connections and empower Gen EQ (Generation Equality) to fight for LGBT equality on campus and beyond.

Background

A reinvigorated and reorganized version of the preexisting coalition Virginia Organizations Uniting Together (VA OUT), Generation Equality (GE) seeks to ensure that college-age advocates remain a political force relevant to a rapid-moving landscape increasingly positive toward sexual and gender minorities.. A three-pong outreach strategy consisting of political advocacy, education and networking will guide the organization’s influence on decision-makers and peers alike.

Like its predecessor, GE is based on the believe that young people, especially students, offer unique insight and energy to GLBTQ advocacy.

GE is primarily a college and university organization in which any student, faculty or staff members is welcome to participate. Non-college students under age 25 are also invited if affiliated with the nearest member-college or university.  Individual or group memberships will be available at no cost.
