Charles H. Whitebread (1943-2008), was a well-liked and award-winning law professor at the University of Virginia Law School from 1968 to 1981 and then at University of Southern California.  He came to UVA directly out of Yale Law School and received the Distinguished Professor Award in 1972 and again in 1980.  Whitebread maintained a home in Charlottesville until his death and gave the commencement address for the Law School’s 2000 graduation. He returned to the UVA faculty as a visiting law professor once while on the faculty at USC and taught criminal procedure at the FBI Academy in Quantico.  Whitebread was celebrated for his scholarly abilities (among his books was a leading text on Criminal Procedure and a seminal work on the history of marijuana laws) and for his ability to "connect" to generation after generation of law students. He pledged $100,000 in 1996 to found a drop-in facility at the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center in Hollywood that offers life-saving services to homeless and at-risk youths.
