Pro-equality candidate to take open delegate seat

Fairfax, VA – Equality Virginia released a statement today in response to Rob Krupicka’s victory in Tuesday’s special election.

“Residents of the 45^th District continue to vote for fairness and equality,” Executive Director James Parrish said.  “We are fortunate to have a friend in our corner and a straight ally in the General Assembly to help move the Commonwealth forward.”

Krupicka fills David Englin’s seat representing parts of Fairfax and Arlington counties along with Alexandria.

Fair-minded candidate to takes open senate seat in Norfolk.

Norfolk, VA – Equality Virginia released a statement today in response to Kenny Alexander’s victory in Tuesday’s special election.

“Residents of the Virginia’s 5th District have cast a ballot for fairness,” Executive Director James Parrish said.  “We look forward to a continued relationship with Alexander in the General Assembly to make the Commonwealth a better and more inclusive place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Virginians. We are fortunate to have a straight ally in our corner.”

Alexander fills Yvonne Miller’s seat representing parts of Norfolk and Chesapeake.

LGBT Advocacy Organization Recognizes Virginians Committed To Equality

Norfolk, VA — On Nov. 10, Equality Virginia continues its tradition of paying tribute to outstanding contributors in the fight for equal rights for all Virginians at its Legends Gala in Hampton Roads.

With the event in its 7th year, EV honors Carlton Hardy as its 2012 Equality Virginia Legend and ACCESS AIDS Care with the Legends Community Award.

Hardy has been an agent for change not only in the LGBT community but also through his work as a business leader and active involvement in political campaigns.  He has been active in Virginians for Justice (now Equality Virginia), PACT, Hampton Roads Business OutReach, the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, the Hampton Roads Men’s Chorus, ACCESS AIDS Care, the Newsome House Museum and Cultural Center Foundation, the Virginia Choral Society, and the Leadership Institute of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce.

ACCESS AIDS Care began as the Children’s AIDS Network and Full Circle AIDS Hospice Support over two decades ago. These two groups worked to better the community and those who were living with or were affected by AIDS.  In 2005, these agencies merged and formed ACCESS AIDS Care.  Last year, the organization served over 500 youth and adults, served 12,000 meals to families and individuals, provided over 6,000 rides to medical appointments, and reached over 5,000 individuals through its educational outreach.  Its new LGBT Center provides meeting space and community for the Hampton Roads area.

“These honorees exemplify the cause that we stand for by working for many years on behalf of both the LGBT community, and all residents of Hampton Roads.”   Mike Whitehurst, chairperson for Equality Virginia’s Legends nominating committee, said.

Honorees demonstrated outstanding leadership, courage and commitment to promoting social justice issues such as diversity, equality and human rights making significant contributions to the LGBT community and broader Hampton Roads community.
