Organizational Background: Founded in 1989 as Virginians for Justice, Equality Virginia (EV) is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3) organization that works to address the discrimination and disparities experienced by LGBTQ people, especially transgender people and people of color, through programming, education, and empowerment opportunities. EV Advocates (EVA) is a 501(c)(4) organization that works with EV to advance equal rights for LGBTQ Virginians through public policy and advocacy. Due to these efforts, Virginia recently became the first state in the South to pass LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections in housing, employment, and public spaces.
EV is building a fully inclusive Commonwealth by educating, empowering, and mobilizing Virginians to ensure all LGBTQ people are free to live, love, learn, and work.
Commitment to Racial Justice:
Racial justice is at the forefront of EV’s organizational priorities. The Board of Directors and staff are constantly working to ensure that the disparities experienced by LGBTQ people of color from all backgrounds, and especially Black communities, are addressed in our programming, advocacy, and outreach efforts. As this commitment continues to grow and evolve, we will partner with Black and brown LGBTQ community members to deepen this work.
