A Message From Our Executive Director

We at Equality Virginia are pleased to offer you our 2021 and 2020 Legislative Scorecards,  a brief but comprehensive summary of all of the work that has been accomplished to advance LGBTQ lived equality. As an organization, we are invested in building a fully inclusive Commonwealth by educating, empowering, and mobilizing Virginians to ensure all LGBTQ people can lead dignified and liberated lives.  Along with our supporters, organizational partners, and community leaders, we achieved yet another impressive set of victories that will have real and lasting impacts on the lives of LGBTQ people in Virginia. It is our hope that these scorecards will provide some insight into our policy advocacy work, and will serve as both a record of our community’s successes and a source of motivation for the work that is to come.  

With the tireless efforts of advocates and community members, from emailing lawmakers to testifying  in committee, we were able to make Virginia the first state in the South to make significant strides towards LGBTQ equality over the past two years. Every email, phone call, public comment, and spoken testimony was essential to persuading legislators and securing further protections for our  community. We cannot thank you enough for all that you have done and continue to do to ensure that true, lived  equality for all LGBTQ Virginians becomes a reality. 

We would also like to extend thanks to Governor Northam and all of the pro-equality legislators who continue to draft and pass policy that supports, affirms, and protects the LGBTQ community. However, with each year’s  advancements there are an equal number of opportunities for change that still remain. We hope that you will  continue to dive deeper into this work with us as we seek to prioritize and respond to the needs of community  members who face the greatest barriers, specifically Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Middle Eastern and North African,  Asian, and Pacific Islander LGBTQ Virginians. Together, we can build a Virginia where all LGBTQ people are truly  free to live, love, learn, and work.
