RICHMOND, VA—Equality Virginia today released the following statement from Executive Director Narissa Rahaman after Governor Abigail Spanberger announced her veto of Senate Bill 271/House Bill 483.

“Equality Virginia agrees with Governor Spanberger’s decision to veto HB 483 and SB 271. Prescription drug affordability remains a critical issue for Virginians, including LGBTQ+ people and those living with HIV. But any effort to lower costs must be carefully designed to avoid unintentionally disrupting access to lifesaving medications or further destabilizing Virginia’s already strained HIV care and prevention network. Lowering drug costs and protecting access to essential medications should not be treated as competing goals. Both are possible, but not under the version of the bill the General Assembly sent back to the Governor’s desk for her final consideration. We look forward to continuing conversations with lawmakers, patient advocacy groups, and community members about thoughtful, patient-centered approaches to lowering prescription drug costs while protecting continuity of care.”
